My Honest Opinion on Certified Lover Boy
Last Friday Drakes’s highly anticipated album Certified Lover Boy finally dropped nine months after the initial release date. During this blog, I will rate the album and every song on it, and rank it where it is in Drakes’s choreography.
The opening track on Clb was Champagne Poetry, and I thought it was a great opening song. The beat was a sample unlike any other, and I especially liked the ending of the song. It’s not the beginning was boring, but the ending was a little more energetic.
The second song was Papi’s Home. The beat was not as good as Champagne Poetry, but Drake rapped better overall on this song.
I’m not a fan of Girls Want Girls. If I being honest, it’s my least favorite song on the album. The song felt very generic, and neither Drake nor Lil Baby brought their A-game on this song.
In the bible was alright. Drake brought the same generic flow that was on Girls Want Girls, but Lil Durk’s verse was exceptional; just like on Laugh Now Cry Later. I was not a fan of Giveons verse. It just prolonged the ending of the song and it felt like he wasn’t needed. I wish that Drake included Giveon on either Champagne Poetry or Papi’s Home because I feel like that would be a better fit for him.
Love All was a great song. Jay Z was a great fit and added variety to the song.
Fair Trade is tied as my favorite song on the album. The beat was great, Drake’s vocals were great, and Travis Scott’s feature was great, but a little long.
I actually enjoyed Way 2 Sexy unlike most. It was a lot more popish than rap, and I like how it was included on the album. Futures chorus and verse were great, Drake’s verses were great and Young Thugs feature was great. Of course, I cannot forget about the music video. The music video fits the vibe of the song perfectly, and I thought the inclusion of Kawai Leonard was hilarious.
The next song, TSU is also tied as the best song on the album. Drake came with the same flow as Fair Trade, and to be honest, it fits better with this song’s beat. The reason this song wasn’t unanimously the best song was because of the second part of the song. I found the second beat a little boring and slow.
I’m including N 2 Deep and Pipe Down as one song just because their flows are very similar. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, and I like how they are back-to-back songs.
Yebba’s Heartbreak was a very soulful, heartfelt song and it felt like the halfway point of the album.
No Friends In The Industry is the final song tied for the best song on the album. There was nothing wrong with this song unlike TSU and Fair Trade, it’s just this song’s upside is not as great as either of those songs; that’s why it is not the best song on the album.
Knife Talk was a good song to listen to, but it didn’t have the vibe on the album especially being so soon after Yebba’s Heartbreak.
7am On Bridle Path was the best song on the album from a rap standpoint. You know that this song was a response to Kanye leaking Drake’s address, and it was not direct enough to start another feud, which I think was Drake’s goal.
Race My Mind was alright. I feel like it would go better with Views than Clb, but it was still a great song.
Fountains was by far the worst song on the album. I disliked it very much and I wish he did not include it on the album; the beat sounds like a third grader made it.
You could sense that the album was almost finished when Get Along Better started to play. I enjoyed this song and Ty Dolla $ign was used perfectly.
I really enjoyed You Only Live Twice. This song felt like vintage Drake on a vintage beat. Rick Ross delivered on his verse as always, and Lil Wayne was exceptional as always.
IMY2 was AMAZING. I didn’t this a Drake and Kid Cudi song would actually happen, but when I first listened to this song I knew it lived up to the hype. I also loved that Drake included the Juice Wrld quote at the beginning of the song, setting up the vibe and giving homage to Juice Wrld.
F*cking Fans and The Remorse were alright ending songs for the album, although I would have liked the ending more if Get Along Better was the last song.
My overall thoughts of the album are very positive. I am so high on this album that I ranked it as Drakes second best album ever, only behind Take Care; I would give Certified Lover Boy an 8/10.
